The main types, in plain language.

Most devices fall into a handful of categories. Knowing the difference is usually all it takes to choose well.

External

Bullet

Small, precise and quiet. The most common starting point, and easy to travel with.

External

Clitoral suction

Uses air pulses rather than direct contact, which suits people who find vibration too intense.

External

Wand

Larger, with deeper and broader vibration. Also widely used for general muscle massage.

Internal

G-spot

Curved to reach the front internal wall, where firm pressure is often preferred over vibration.

Combination

Rabbit

Internal and external stimulation at once. Fit matters more here than power.

Anal & prostate

Prostate massagers

Shaped for internal comfort, always with a flared base. Best used slowly and with plenty of lubricant.

Body safety

Material is the part worth being fussy about.

01

Choose non-porous

Body-safe silicone, glass and stainless steel do not trap bacteria and can be cleaned properly.

02

Avoid unlabelled soft plastics

Porous materials such as jelly cannot be fully sanitised and degrade over time.

03

Match your lubricant

Water-based is safe with everything. Silicone lubricant can damage silicone toys, so keep them apart.

04

Anything internal needs a base

For anal use, a flared base or retrieval loop is non-negotiable. It is a safety feature, not a style choice.

Wand massagers

Deeper, broader vibration.

Aura

Wand Vibrator

The classic wand shape, with broad rumbly vibration suited to full-body as well as intimate use.

Care & cleaning

Looking after it properly.

01

Before and after, every time

Warm water and a mild, unscented cleanser. Let it dry fully before storing.

02

Mind the charging port

Only submerge if the product states it is waterproof, and never submerge the charging contacts.

03

Store separately

Keep pieces in a bag or pouch so materials do not react against one another in a drawer.

04

Replace when worn

Any tackiness, tearing or lingering odour means it has reached the end of its life.

Common questions

Asked quietly, answered plainly.

I have never used one. Where should I start?+

Something small, external and simple, such as a bullet. Start on the lowest setting, use lubricant, and treat the first few uses as getting to know what you like rather than aiming at any particular outcome.

Will I become reliant on it?+

This is one of the most common worries and it is not supported by the evidence. Sensitivity is not used up. If anything feels dulled, easing off intensity for a short period is usually all that is needed.

Do I need lubricant?+

It helps almost every time, and it becomes especially useful when hormonal changes affect natural lubrication. Water-based is the safest all-round choice because it works with every material.

Is it safe to use during perimenopause?+

For most people, yes, and comfort-focused use can be a helpful part of intimate wellbeing at this stage. If you experience pain, bleeding or persistent discomfort, speak with your doctor rather than pushing through.

How is it delivered?+

In plain, unbranded packaging with a discreet billing descriptor. Nothing on the outside indicates what is inside or where it came from.
